I am slowly replacing my laptop with AWS Workspace, and you should too

This is for only serial Internet Marketers who don't mind spending a few bucks a month for a more secure, convenient desktop solution.

For those who don't know, AWS Workspace is AWS's "Desktop as a service" solution.
You can have Windows or Linux desktops at any configuration, login virtually from any platform.

My laptop is powerful enough, but I rely on it quite a bit. If I mess up my laptop for any number of reasons - I am screwed. It kinda happened once (spilled hot coffee on my keyboard) and I learned my lesson.

I was looking for a reliable "Cloud Desktop" solution. Who is more reliable when it comes to the cloud than AWS?

I am slowly moving everything to my "Cloud Desktop", Intenet is blazing fast. My development works have been very productive.

Thinking of purchasing a more "lightweight" travel-ready laptop, which will only serve to access my cloud desktop.

I'd rather have my 64GB 12 core 4GHz with 3500MB/sec PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 SSD drive with 6 monitors and 2 nvidia quadro graphics cards driving them all up to 4k. :)

Zero lag. Everything instant. Chrome starts in < 1s and a 1 million row csv file extracted in 2 seconds(200MB) and opened in < 10s.

And everything stored in one drive, including my docs/downloads. Zero reliance on local files other than applications.

Nowadays laptops are small and powerful so u can carry a good one with u without being an inconvenience I would take aws workspace as my backup plan because lets suppose that u just went to a client meeting u are going to show something really cool about the project but the signal is too bad in the conference room that u can??t even connect to the workspace ;)
isn't kinda like VPN, log in anywhere to access usually is window base. how much you pay per month than.

I honestly don't see the advantage of this. Your main concern is losing access to your data as it seems, but what stops you from doing proper backups and using cloud services to keep your devices in sync?

I purchased 4 laptops in my life, 3 of them are working just fine. As a Microsoft fanboy, they all got Office + OneDrive installed so I can access all relevant files from any of them. Should I spill coffee on my first one, I'd just boot up the second device.

Yes, Remote desktop has become better and better over the years, but it's still not the same experience as working locally.

So I save all important stuff off to gdrive business or personal anyway so what is better here?

If your laptop died how will you connect ? On tiny phone or tablet screen?

Now you need 2 licenses for some softwares and as others have said what about lag? I don't see the benefit here , you should have cloud backup or direct sync to it anyway so you don't lose any important data

I prefer cloud only for some important files while I am using a strong bulky laptop with a big monitor as daily work + a travel one when necessary, happy till now. It's quite impossible to work at the same speed from my POV, maybe just saving the work, but I already do that now as my entire library is less than 400mb. But it suits you, that's pretty nice! Good luck!

Interesting idea. I found 4vcpu aws instances are a bit input-laggy. Did you find any lightweight laptops?

Buying a cheap buy sexy chromebook and using Amazon workspace is not a bad idea if you have at least decent internet on your PC, you will also have a static IP i believe which i also a positive.

This is my primary concern as well. Any amount of latency over RDP is incredibly frustrating, especially for development.
I use NoMachine for remote desktop. It's so quick I've used it to play games over LAN from another computer, it's like being sat in front of the physical machine.

So it didn't turn into code?
JK ;)
How much is it costing you per month?
It seem like a good idea, if more than one people working on same module and need to switch instantly.

Well, just as much as The Chromebook you bought just to access your powerful AWS, from a beach with at best spotty wifi....

In the end, it could make sense for some, but def not under the aspect of not losing data.. you literally can sync to g drive business/private and access it on ANY device as well...

So it all depends what you need but for the pricing, you may just get the same laptop specs or better...and you still need a device to access it anyway so that is where this all stops to make sense.

PS you could try for free until Sep 30 it seems (https://aws.amazon.com/workspaces/pricing/?nc=sn&loc=3)

Now, if you get a win option including their license just getting the same as my old dell XPS 15 with 32 GB of ram ...

I mean for very specific use cases it may make sense for hourly etc. but paying $127 monthly + another laptop to just access it..Especially if your developing it is pure waste of money...

Get the pc from iron man movie. Always ready to listen to you and do all processing

I was also a cloud fan boy but the cost doesn't justify it so better to go local and take regular backups. I run websites for the most part so it's the hosting and my WordPress setup that I am more concerned about than my computer.

My computer only has the to do list that gets updated daily with new tasks etc (should move to trello). For rest of the things, there are already websites and tools to do the job. Even photoshop like website is available online (free and ads supported)

Laptops can't handle 100 open tabs in browser and hence the need for a desktop. When travelling or sitting away from desktop, use TeamViewer to access the desktop from laptop anywhere (just the extra electricity cost)

Doesn't even work out cost effective... e.g. in Work I purchase and install PCs with the following spec.. i5,16GB memory and a 240GB SSD with a 5 year warranty. They don't even cost ??600 this spec and they're warrantied for 5 years with a cost of ownership of ??10 per month. Which is ??45.43 per month cheaper than this.

Wow! I really liked the csv part. Can I buy it on Amazon or something?
